Daily Meme: Name Dropping Jack Kemp

During his career in Congress, Paul Ryan has tried hard to plant the idea that he is the second coming of Jack Kemp, whom he worked for briefly in the 1990s. At the Kemp Foundation's first event in 2010, the Wisconsin representative said, “Jack is the reason I ran for Congress. I was motivated by Ronald Reagan, but inspired by Jack Kemp .” Even earlier, in 1999 , he said, “I learned economics working for Jack Kemp." Paul Ryan's attempt at inception seems to have worked pretty well. To wit, "Jack Kemp 2016: The Case for Paul Ryan" Or Politico Magazine 's piece this week, "Is Paul Ryan the GOP's Next Jack Kemp?" Bob Woodson, a community organizer in Philadelphia, said of watching Paul Ryan speak, “I felt like I was watching another Jack Kemp ." NPR headlined a 2012 piece , "Ryan's Speech Revives The Spirit Of Jack Kemp, War Over Reaganomics" Joe Nocera wrote in 2011, "Ryan clearly views himself as Kemp’s natural successor. At 41, he’s been in Congress most of his adult life, where he...

Daily Meme: America's Ever-Complicated Affair with Guns

Saturday will be the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that left 20 small children dead. Gun policy in the United States has changed markedly in that year, with 109 new state laws being passed. Seventy of those laws loosen pre-existing gun regulations. Gun-rights groups spent seven times more money lobbying legislatures than gun-control groups did. The company that makes the assault rifle Adam Lanza used "raked in $94 million in profits on more than $1 billion in gun and ammo sales," from January to this September, "compared with just $500,000 in net profits during the same period in 2012." Public support for stronger gun laws may be beginning to dissipate. This week, the Senate extended a ban on undetectable firearms, but declined to fix any of the decade-old law's loopholes. Earlier attempts to strengthen federal gun legislation this year, like passing an assault-weapons ban, also failed. Gun-control supporters have made some gains. "In the past year...

Daily Meme: You Are in a Foxhole

Yesterday, Representative Steve Stockman posted a letter on his website. It began, " Dear patriot , You are in a foxhole fighting to save our constitutional Republic … and the last thing you need is a Republican bayonet in your back. But that’s what liberal John Cornyn has been doing to you every day." That would be the Liberal John Cornyn, who prefers to be called "Big Bad John" and happens to have an 88-percent rating from the American Conservative Union. The Texas senator's office also says—oh so proudly—that he is "ranked as the second most conservative senator in America." Although Cornyn did tell Texas Monthly , "I love Robert Caro’s books, and I wish we had more Lyndon Johnsons in the Senate today when it comes to the skill to actually get something done." One can easily observe, after scanning a few sequester and shutdown headlines, that getting things done is perhaps not a conservative strength. Maybe Stockman's complaints originate not with ideology, but with legislative...

Daily Meme: A History of Shakenalysis

2013 : "Briefly laying aside differences hardened over decades, President Barack Obama on Tuesday shook the hand of the president of Cuba at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela." 2013 : "Obama Shakes Hands With Raul Castro. Let’s All Freak Out." 2013 : "An encounter between Obama and Iran’s new president at the United Nations on Tuesday would be the most important—or at least the most analyzed—handshake since the historic grip between Rabin and Arafat (or, if you prefer, Nixon and Elvis)." 2011 : "It is not unusual for members of European royalty to greet Japan’s imperial couple with a social kiss. Therefore, the agency does not consider such a greeting to be a breach of etiquette. For the record, Mrs. Clinton greeted the emperor with a handshake." 2010: "A conservative Muslim minister in Indonesia who is being criticized for shaking hands with Michelle Obama—and thus violating his pious claim that he avoids contact with women not related to him—blamed the exchange on the First...
