Last week, Newsweek published education writer Jay Mathews’ annual ranking of “America’s Top Public High Schools.” As in years past, the list is quite controversial.

You needn't have paid attention in math class beyond 3rd grade to understand why. Mathews ranks schools using an incredibly simple formula:
