Thanks to the Republican resentment machine, the 2008 presidential contest is shaping up to be a referendum on immigration, and, in an effort to differentiate themselves from one another, Democrats are buying into the story as the Republicans have framed it -- which happens to be a perfect wedge issue for cleaving apart the Democratic base. In the last two Democratic presidential debates, first Hillary Clinton, then Barack Obama were excoriated for fumbling their answers to the question of driver's licenses for undocumented workers.
