Momma said wonk you out

JANET NAPOLITANO FOR SUPREME COURT?

I know that Janet Napolitano is floating around on the White House's short list. I don't really understand why: She's neither very liberal nor a great legal thinker nor armed with radically different life experiences than most members of the governmental elite. Rather, she was an effective moderate politician and, before that, an apparently skilled attorney general. But nevertheless, she'd be an enormously controversial nominee on the Court itself. Her early rise to prominence came as the attorney for...Anita Hill. So I guess what you can say about her is that there's probably no nominee in the country who would do more to piss off Clarence Thomas.

So I guess what you can say about her is that there's probably no nominee in the country who would do more to piss of[f] Clarence Thomas.

That might almost be enough. Hell, at least there would be some entertainment value.

So I guess what you can say about her is that there's probably no nominee in the country who would do more to piss of Clarence Thomas.

Well, aside from Professor Hill, who has expressly said that she does not want the job.

there's probably no nominee in the country who would do more to piss off Clarence Thomas.

So much so that he quits in disgust (pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease)?

oh, noes!

please say that this is an April Fool's Joke.

The people of Arizona have really suffered as a result of replacing Janet Napolitano with a Republican governor, teamed up with a very Republican legislature. I never understood this Cabinet pick, especially since Napolitano was polling well ahead of John McCain for Senate in 2010. I would think that Obama would want as many new Democratic senators as possible next year.

I hope the Supreme Court pick is young, progressive and very, very smart.

She does not qualify under the criterion Obama himself set out in 2007: I would pick someone who understands "teenage moms." Brilliant remark. That was spoken BT (before teleprompter). She is single and has no children.

I was talking a while ago (pre-Homeland Security appointment) to an AZ state employee about what they would do with a Republican Governor if Napolitano was appointed to the cabinet. This person expressed hope that Napolitano would be appointed as a Supreme Court justice instead, hoping that there would be time to ensure a more moderate governor in the state before she went to pursue higher ambitions.

But, this person indicated that it was widely assumed in the state that she was closeted and probably wouldn't be able to pass the confirmation without exposing her sexual orientation. Which, this state employee thought, was highly unlikely. But we *have* been hearing about a possible gay appointee...?

2 points. The Anita Hill nomination would piss Thomas off even more, and Napolitano would probably fill the gay woman card.

In some ways this is a very gay friendly administration, with closeted gays in high places. It remains to be seen if they will appoint an openly gay man or woman.

Thank you...
