If the sequester had come to California 25 years ago, its effect would have been catastrophic. Today, its effects are decidedly less draconian – but since today’s California has a considerably less robust economy than that of the late '80s, the sequester will still cool off the state’s already tepid recovery.

Latinos, Linked Fate, and the DREAM Act

At Real Clear Politics, Sean Trende doesn’t think that President Obama will benefit politically from his decision to unilaterally implement a lite version of the DREAM Act. In addition to the potential for backlash, there’s the fact that Latinos aren’t a major demographic in most swing states:

Nativism Trumps Self-Interest.

Arizona’s SB 1070 has yet to take effect, but it’s already causing an exodus of immigrant families from the state. Predictably, this is hurting the state's economy. As The Arizona Republic reports, many small businesses have seen a precipitous drop in their customer base, and apartment owners are struggling to find new renters for rooms where undocumented immigrants used to live.

Arizona Is More Than Anti-Immigration.

Arizona has already become the laughing-stock of the nation by passing an anti-immigration bill that would allow police to demand proof of citizenship of anyone who seems to be "breathing while Latino," and now things have gotten even worse. The state's Department of Education has been telling school districts that teachers with accents shouldn't be teaching English and have to be removed from their classrooms or take classes.
