Pakistani army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Gen. Stanley McChrystal head to a meeting of representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the United States. Even before McChrystal’s ouster, Kayani and other Pakistani officials were meeting with Hamid Karzai, president of Afghanistan, to forge a partnership between the two countries. Among other proposals, Pakastani officials say they can broker a deal between the Afghani government and the network of Sirajuddin Haqqani — a major player in Afghanistan’s insurgency. American officials are increasingly concerned the rapprochement could threaten U.S. interests in the region.
