Human Rights First was decidedly happier about General David Petraeus speaking out against “Burn a Quran Day” than I was. The GOP meanwhile, seems to have settled on the argument that a pastor who thinks Islam is satanic celebrating the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by burning Qurans is equivalent to Muslims worshipping near Ground Zero. So instead of simply associating all of Islam with the violent terrorist fanatics who attacked the U.S. on 9/11, the GOP is just associating the act of being a Muslim with being the kind of person who gets a kick out of burning holy books just to provoke offense. No need to get all crazy and treat Muslims like individual people.
