I was happily reading this New York Times article on the joys of affordable sushi, at least until I got midway through and discovered affordable is defined as a $65 prix fixe. Yipes. We District-dwellers, of course, have the superb Kotobuki, which pairs above average sushi with actually affordable prices. The lobster roll is a dollar, kids. A dollar! Order five. But the bigger revelation is across the street, at Black Salt fish market. I recently helped a friend handle a 12 person sushi dinner party off $30 of their fish (wild salmon, big eye tuna, in case you're curious). The markup on sushi is incredible. Meanwhile, if you're interested in actually learning about sushi, I've been reading The Story of Sushi: An Unlikely Saga of Raw Fish and Rice by Trevor Colson and it's riveting. One of the best food books I've read in some time. Insightful and deeply researched and grounded in interesting narratives, particularly that of Takumi, a Japanese pop star who decides to become a chef and comes to study sushi in America because no one in Japan will take his culinary ambitions seriously.Image used under a CC license from APC33.
