John McCain, valiant straight-talker that he is, strongly defended his record on economic issues today, denying a reporter’s accusation that he’s admitted to a lack of expertise on the topic. He asserted, “I’m very strong on the economy. I understand it.” Of course he does! For example, he certainly has more experience in the Savings & Loans industry than Obama. One tiny problem, though:

“The issue of economics is something that I’ve really never understood as well as I should. I understand the basics, the fundamentals, the vision, all that kind of stuff,” [McCain] said. “But I would like to have someone I’m close to that really is a good strong economist. As long as Alan Greenspan is around I would certainly use him for advice and counsel.”

Oops. I fully expect the major news networks to report this breathlessly for days, if not weeks. After all, why wouldn’t they, after all the attention Wes Clark‘s comments received?
