The most Obama-friendly counties in Virginia and Florida haven’t reported yet. So basically, chill. What we’re waiting for is Obama to flip a red state. VA, FL, IN, NC. The fact that they’re too close to call right now augurs well for Obama. —Dana Goldstein

The Identity Politics Election
Race, gender, and their discontents never went away, but thanks to this election, we’re actually discussing them again. That’s progress.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR PALIN.
A return to her roots as a “journalist,” apparently. After voting in Wasilla this morning, Sarah Palin complained to reporters about “the state of journalism today” and said she’d like to help improve the profession because she has “great respect for the world of journalism.” The culprit, Palin said, is “the blogosphere, the two, three […]
ELECTION DAY AT SCHOOL.
I was probably a bit too grumpy when I wrote my post about waiting in line for 1.5 hours to vote this morning. On the upside — and this has been noted before — one of the best things about voting is getting to spend some time inside a local public school. This is especially […]
ON VOTING.
— In Washington, D.C, voting in national elections is essentially meaningless. We don’t have a vote in the Senate and our symbolic House representative, Eleanor Holmes Norton, inevitably sails to victory. Our three electoral college votes are guaranteed to be Democratic. That’s why it was all the more extraordinary that in my D.C. neighborhood of […]
THE LAST OBAMA RALLY.
Confidence: It’s not hard to have when it looks probable that you’ll be elected president. But in Manassas, Virginia last night, watching Barack Obama deliver his final major campaign speech, I was reminded of the fact that Obama has been so moving, so successful, and such a breath of fresh air as a Democrat in […]

Observed this weekend… Jack O’bama on Brandywine St. NW, near Van Ness metro stop. Iconographic Obama graffiti car, on 13th St. NW in Columbia Heights. —Dana Goldstein
LESLIE THE BUTTON-SELLER.
At the George Mason University Hillary for Obama rally last night, I met Leslie Zenna, who was selling some unique buttons. The most popular is pictured here: “Another middle-aged white woman for Obama.” Others included “Elitist for Obama” and “Another working stiff for Obama.” Zenna told me he’s been selling political buttons for years and […]
LAST NIGHT: HILLARY FOR OBAMA IN FAIRFAX, VA.
Hillary Clinton made one of the final stops of her campaign season last night at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2004, John Kerry became the first Democrat in 40 years to win Fairfax County, an affluent area in the second ring of suburbs outside Washington, D.C. The faces in the crowd at the […]
ABOUT THOSE SINGING CHILDREN…
I was so impressed with the policy chops of the seventh-grade singers and dancers we posted about earlier today that I did some reading on the school they attend, the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. As I suspected, it is no ordinary middle school but an incredibly media-savvy private institution. (Check out the professional head […]
