Endorsements

From Robert Farley: Although Lawyers, Guns and Money does not typically make endorsements in University of California-Berkeley student elections, the strong qualifications of one candidate in particular have come to my attention. Eric Marshall, candidate, is distinguished by his commitment to strong, competent leadership with the highest of professional standards, and by the fact that […]

T-T-T-T-Thompson

I’m rather surprised that floating Fred Thompson’s name in a GOP poll nets him 12% of the vote. That suggests his name recognition is far higher than I suspected. Meanwhile, I’m much less sanguine than Matt about Thompson’s chances. Matt seems to think Thompson’s relative paucity of experience and lack of legislative accomplishments will grievously […]

Webb’s First Months

Terry Samuel’s been paying close attention to Jim Webb’s early months in the Senate, and Webb’s surprisingly confident and effective performance have Terry wondering whether “this ex-Republican red state senator might serve as an exemplar for Democrats, as they head into 2008 trying to wrest the White House from the GOP while defining themselves as […]

New Vistas…For Trash

Brad Plumer has a fascinating article on an issue I’d never considered: The enormous dump of toxic materials that’ll come when Microsoft’s new Vista operating system renders millions of computers obsolete and creates a sudden rush for replacements. WHERE’S THE BEEF? It’s good to see Obama getting a bit of mainstream media pushback for his campaign’s lack of substance and specifics. Issues matter! And so do approaches to issues. At the SEIU/CAP health care forum last weekend, Obama explained away his lack of a health care policy by suggesting that “every four years […]

The Greatest BloggingHeads Ever

I was going to write this whole post solving, for Ann Althouse, the mystery of why progressive bloggers don’t like her. But never mind. Really, I just beg you to go watch her flip out on BloggingHeads when Garance mentions the Jessica Valenti episode (which is certainly the root of my dislike for Althouse). Click […]

New Sun Column

On the mortality of our leaders and their loved ones, our collective unwillingness to entertain such considerations normally, and what the reaction to the Edwardses says about how we react to illness in this country. It’s all here.

The Business of Preaching

This is an interesting excerpt from Dan Gilgoff’s new book on the rise of James Dobson. I’ve made this point before, but so many of us experience James Dobson in his political incarnation that we forget that his prominence and power comes precisely because millions of Americans don’t. The megachurches, with their remarkably innovative techniques […]

The Uninsured

Good news out of the Census Bureau today: Estimates that the uninsured have reached 47 million were overstated, the real number is closer to 45 million. That’s two million fewer people than we though lacking coverage, which is a welcome surprise.
