Everyone has problems. Cindy McCain used to have a problem with drug use. Many people in America have problems with drugs. If they get caught and don’t happen to have nine houses, they often end up in jail for long periods of time, even if they don’t steal money from charities to feed their habit.
I would assume, given his wife’s problem with drug use, that John McCain might have some ideas about the counterproductive execution of America’s war on drugs, and whether or not our laws punish people excessively for the kind of struggles that, McCain knows, are all too common in the United States. Some enterprising reporter should ask McCain whether he supports mandatory minimums and whether our current drug laws appropriately deal with people who have substance abuse problems, and why exactly, the abuse of prescription drugs, should be punished so lightly in comparison to others. So far, all I’ve heard from McCain on this kind of issue is that he’d like to apply Army counterinsurgency doctrine to civilian policing, which isn’t so comforting.
