CPAC was actually pretty low key on the offensive stuff this year, with the exception of the right’s unfortunate embrace of its Islamophobic fringe. That’s partially because several religious right organizations boycotted the event over the inclusion of GOProud, a gay conservative group. It also may be because the event seems to be skewing ever more libertarian, which makes social conservative Kevin McCullough very sad.
Libertarians and Conservatives are as different as Libertarians and Liberals. The truth is libertarians are the worst form of political affiliation in the nation. Combining the desire of economic greed, with the amoral desire to promote any behavior regardless of its cost to our culture is a stark departure from the intent of the Founding Fathers.
If this is an attitude gaining traction among social conservatives, they should probably rethink it. Something like 90% of conservatives’ rhetoric on domestic policy (not actual domestic policy) is borrowed from libertarians. Without them, the conservative movement suddenly becomes dominated by people making broad, normative judgments about gays, Muslims and immigrants and trying to decide which countries to invade next.
