The movement for better pay for teachers that ignited in West Virginia, where thousands of teachers went on strike, and has swept through states like Oklahoma and Arizona, reached North Carolina on Wednesday. Wearing “red 4 ed” T-shirts, an estimated 20,000 teachers and public education supporters filled the streets of Raleigh and marched to the state legislative building for the Rally for Respect, calling for higher pay and increased education funding. According to the National Education Association, North Carolina ranks 39th in teacher pay, and 37th in per-pupil spending.
