IN THE BLUEGRASS. Anti-war and anti-Mitch McConnell blogging and activist efforts seem to be paying off in Kentucky, at least to the extent that we've made the cover of the Nation. In part because of the war, and in part because of deep corruption in the state Republican Party, activists and organizers are making serious gains in a state where few would have predicted any success. Mitch McConnell should be safe by all predictors, but he's acting like he's terrified. Reuters reported the following:
[McConnell accused] Democrats controlling Congress of suffering from a twin obsession: the Iraq war and conducting investigations, instead of getting down to the real work of Congress….He’s "deeply disappointed" the new Democratic-controlled Congress has not tackled the "tough issues," like Social Security…..Besides their "preoccupation" with the Iraq war, Democrats spend their time dreaming of "taxation, regulation and litigation. It’s in their DNA."Right.... because let me tell you, dismantling Social Security is high on the priority list of so many Kentuckans. You can hardly move in this state without wandering into a rural Kentuckan demanding an end to Federal entitlement programs. And the Libertarian Party in Kentucky... well, "Other" won almost 1% of the vote in Kentucky in 2004, and possibly some of those were Libertarians. What's really remarkable is that McConnell considers the war to be such bad news for Republicans in a border state that he's trying to shift attention back to domestic issues...-- Robert Farley[Ed. Note: Recently, Andrew Green reported for TAP Online from the Kentucky political picnic, where there were signs that McConnell might have reason to be worried about his '08 re-election bid.]
