It's no secret that Andrew Sullivan prefers manly men; His giddy pro-testosterone piece in TheNew York Times Magazine confirmed that some time ago. Fair enough -- to each his own. But no pundit, no matter how seriously he takes the threat to "traditional masculinity," should let his gonads influence his political views. Especially when the "revival of maleness" hinges on Tom Ford's new clothing line, lovingly described on Sullivan's website (See "Seeing a New ManCalling the Tune, Fashion Gets in Step" in The New York Times for more).
Here are the unfortunate results, as extrapolated on AndrewSullivan.com:
Masculinity at its best isn't just brawn; it's also wisdom and maturity. Callthis the age of Rummy. One reason I tend to be an optimistic conservative is thatI think certain things will always be true, no matter how hard utopians try todeny or change it. So however daffy the culture can get at times about, say, gender, and although great damage can be done in the meantime, the truth willeventually emerge.
And here we were thinking that wisdom and maturity might have nothing to do withgender at all.
