Liberals are always going to be tough on the president, but it's worth remembering to whom his speech was addressed last night; the public not so well-versed in the issues who just want to remember why they voted for him.
According to a CBS poll, they got it:
A CBS poll reported that 83 percent of respondents approved of the speech Obama gave. Polls had shown Americans overwhelmingly wanting the White House to focus on jobs and the economy as it pushed or health care reform, and evidently Obama's speech did well to give viewers the impression that he's on the same page they are. From CBS's poll write-up:
That can be really good. If voters remember they like him, they can supply their own villains from the Senate. And they might forgive tactics he takes to get it done, especially on health care:
On health care, President Obama reiterated the need for reform, and most speech watchers (67 percent) approved of the president's plan for dealing with the issue. Prior to his speech, 54 percent said they supported his plans.
And those are really the folks Obama has to convince.
