News Junkies may remember that the Tribune company has been trying to gut the LA Times, one of the few remaining dailies with enough staff to engage in quality investigative journalism. The Times is profitable, of course, but as a publicly traded company, Tribune has been seeking to cut costs at the newspaper for some time now. Editor Ron Baquet refused to go along with the Tribune's staff cuts, went public, and was forced out of the company.
Now comes the news that billionaires Ron Burkle and Eli Broad are considering purchasing not just the LA Times, but the entire Tribune company. So maybe there's some hope for the paper, as well as the Chicago Cubs, after all.
