Missed this earlier in the week, but apparently John McCain has asked his top donors to dole out a little more America's Mayor:
"We need to help Mayor Giuliani retire his debt as soon as possible so we can move forward with everyone spending 100% of their time helping to get John McCain in the White House. The time Rudy Giuliani has to spend raising money to pay down his debt is time he could be spending raising money and reaching out to voters for us."
Giuliani ended his presidential bid with $3.1 million in primary campaign debts. He also had $4 million in the bank, but by law that money could only be spent on general election costs and has since been returned to donors.
This just doesn't add up for me. Does the McCain campaign really believe that Rudy's fundraising prowess is great enough to warrant making a special pledge to its donors on Rudy's behalf? What's next? Reaching out to Ron Paul and his small donor network? An appeal to Mitt Romney and his deep pockets? Or is this simply about getting Giuliani more involved in the campaign?
