Thoughtful Obama is pointing his reflection ray at the problems of your cities metropolitan areas.
Obama is giving a speech in Miami this morning about "A Metropolitan Strategy for America." It's a good talk. I like the focus on metropolitan areas rather than cities, as folks really do need to look at dense areas as a unit, rather than breaking them up into different subcategories (city, suburbs, outer suburbs, etc). The policies are nothing shocking: Some investment credits, some infrastructure development, some broadband efforts. It's worth noting that Obama's promise to fill the coffers of the Federal Highway Fund comes before his promise to build a "a world-class transit system." He does, however, say, "I don’t want to see the fastest train in the world built halfway around the world in Shanghai, I want to see it built right here in the United States of America." I'd sort of like to see that too, so Gobama! At the end of the day, I don't really know how this compares to the promises of previous campaigns. Folks like to say that Obama will be more attuned to urban issues because he spent most of his life in major cities, but who knows? In any case, the whole speech is below the fold for folks who feel like reading it:
