A lot of people were shocked yesterday by this poll by PPP showing that about half of Republican primary voters in Mississippi think interracial marriage should be illegal. The sample size was a bit small, but if the survey is accurate, it's pretty startling.
We asked voters on this poll whether they think interracial marriage should be legal or illegal- 46% of Mississippi Republicans said it should be illegal to just 40% who think it should be legal. For the most part there aren't any huge divides in how voters view the candidates or who they support for the nomination based on their attitudes about interracial marriage but there are a few exceptions.
Pop Serwer, though, points out that there's at least one hopeful sign for the state as a whole:
Mississippi led the nation in the growth of mixed marriages for most of the last decade, according to Mr. Frey’s analysis of the American Community Survey. Still, multiracial people are a tiny percentage of the state’s population: 34,000, about 1.1 percent. And many here complain of enduring racial inequities.
I suppose the question to ask is what percentage of those Republicans are over the age of 65. It sounds to me like their kids might be getting over it.
