Graphic artist L. Eckstein has posted a really interesting and beautiful set of charts from the turn of the last century about the state of black people in America, prepared by then-Atlanta University Professor W.E.B. DuBois in preparation for the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Atlanta University ultimately merged with Clark University and became Clark Atlanta. But you can get a hint from this of the days when teachers at black schools were among the best in the country -- Jim Crow was funneling the most educated black minds into a very limited set of professions.
