I sort of missed the whole discussion over Pete Stark's Americare health reform plan and "the dogmatism of the center," but read Matt Yglesias, Rick Hertzberg, and Josh Patashnik if you want to catch up. The basic gist of the argument is this: Stark's plan is the best of the non-single payer options. It covers the most people and saves the most money. It's also among the least likely to pass. Rick Hertzberg calls this "the dogmatism of the center," and notes that "it can be just as mulish, destructive, and impervious to reality as the right- and left-wing varieties." A couple points:
