RAISE YOUR RIGHT HAND TO ENLIST... AND BECOME A CITIZEN. The Department of Defense issued a press release today for a ceremony that will be held this 4th of July during which 600 troops will reenlist to promote reenlistment. But in an interesting twist on the immigration debate, 100 of those serving tours in Iraq will also undergo the citizenship ceremony. Too often people have the an image of immigrant workers in a field or a meat-packing plant, but as the American Immigration Law Foundation estimates, more than 60,000 immigrants serve active duty in the armed forces, making up about 5 percent of enlisted personnel on active duty.* --Kay Steiger UPDATE: *This text was altered from the original for clarity.
