On my last night in England, I went out with some friends to open mic show called the Candle Club that takes place at a local pub. In addition to the usual laid-back acoustic performances, the compere was encouraging people to come up and tell jokes. So I cleared my joke with him, and when he heard where I was from, he was eager to have me tell it.
I introduced myself and told them that I was from Texas. The joke began, "Why is Laura Bush always on top when she has sex with George?" I paused, and somebody in the audience stole the punchline -- "Because George W. Bush can only fuck up!" The audience applauded, and unanimously voted me a free pint. The compere took my picture (along with my lovely host), and put it up on the Candle Club photo page. Ah, moments when the left discovers itself in bars...
Now I'm visiting family in San Francisco, where I may go to Drinking Liberally on Monday.
