The New York Times Magazine had an interesting piece over the weekend on surrogate parenthood. Alex Kuczynski, who couldn't have children for medical reasons, wrote about having another woman bear her and her husband's child. I don't have a lot to say about it, but Dana had a good post on the essay. I would have actually preferred to read an article written by the surrogate mother, who entered the transaction in order to net $25,000 for her own children's college funds, but as Ramesh Ponnuru acidly notes, "I suppose the Times is less likely to have a surrogate than a buyer already on staff." On a related note, my friend Kerry Howley wrote a remarkable article a few years ago on her experience selling her ovaries. So read that, too.
