I'm at the panel asking whether there's really such a chasm between the military and progressives -- and while the answer may be no, there are very few attendees in the room to hear it. One of the speakers, however, made an interesting point. As the Illinois director for an anti-war veteran's group, he said that in recent months, eight or nine out of every ten vets he approaches have turned on the war. And they're terrified of going back.
We often hear that the troops in the field are fairly positive on their mission. Spencer Ackerman wrote a great article on exactly this a couple months back. But what of those who aren't in the field, who don't have that existential imperative to slap some sunshine on war? What evolution is occurring in their views?
