that John Edwards really has two separate campaigns running side-by-side: “A tough, bare-knuckle one directed at getting Edwards’ message out in the national press and taking on Hillary Clinton, and a warm, positive one directed at the Iowa voters”. It’s not clear to me what will happen as the two campaigns start to converge, though I suspect that even right up until caucus night, the local coverage of the contest is very different from the view we get as East Coast reporters descend on Des Moines.
