With Mitt leading in Iowa and NH, and Giuliani and McCain fleeing the Ames Straw Poll, here are the latest numbers from Rasmussen. As the pollster said this morning, "On the Democratic side of the aisle, far and away the best general election performance was earned by Edwards." Looks like the haircut story isn't fooling anybody. GOP wins in red, our wins in blue.
Why does Edwards do so much better against Romney? (A Newsweek poll some time ago had Edwards with a 64-27 lead over Mitt.) Perhaps the natural response of a religious conservative who feels threatened by Mormonism is to take comfort in the Southern accent, no matter what issue positions might be attached. The sheer quantity of anti-Hillary propaganda ingested by conservatives over the last 15 years prevents her from looking like a safe place to run.
