Perhaps the most surreal part, however, is the band of goats encircling and taunting an anti-abortion protester who has a huge and particularly grisly poster. (The past two days have confirmed that the anti-abortion crowd is dogged, obsessed, and like Visa: Everywhere you want to be.) One of the goats, carrying a sign that says […]

Do Unto Ashcroft:
Missouri Senator John Ashcroft — recently defeated by the late Governor Mel Carnahan — is one of those observers held responsible for increasing the number of battles over judicial and other nominees. The arch-conservative senator furiously opposed President Clinton’s appointments; often, he was one of the only senators fighting. Now George W. Bush has chosen […]
Tough D:
With Republicans controlling Congress, the White House, and — apparently — the Supreme Court, things might look bleak for progressives. But for those concerned about a crush of conservatism, hush — the sky is not quite falling. A discombobulated team of Democratic senators will strain valiantly to hold it up. I’ll Be the Judge:
As the trial opens today in a case in which plaintiffs charge Republican voting officials with illegally permitting GOP operatives to tamper with absentee voter applications in Seminole County, many observers are calling the case a dark horse that may crush George W. Bush’s momentum. Presiding over the case is Judge Nikki Ann Clark, a […]
