Thursday night, a Portland, Maine news reporter broke the story that as a 30-year-old, Bush was arrested for drunken driving. His blood alcohol level was .10. “I’m not proud of that,” said Bush at a hurriedly called news conference. What Bush does seem to be proud of is his harsh treatment of drunk drivers […]

Teach Peace:
The discovery of a Columbine-like shooting plot by four New Bedford, Mass. high school students has renewed debate about how best to prevent school violence. In this March 2001 article, Lindsay Sobel explores promising programs that teach the foundations of conflict resolution before students even enter high school. A Conversation with Lawrence Lessig
The Democratic Promise of Open Source and the Patents that Might Drag it Down Q: You write powerfully in The American Prospect about the necessity of well-constructed government regulation to support open-source software. What makes open-source a good worth protecting? A: I think what is significant about open-source software is not so much that it […]
About Face:
When George W. Bush nominated John Ashcroft for attorney general, commentators portrayed it as the one bone that George W. Bush would throw to the religious right — a way of shutting up the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons so he could ignore them henceforth. Oops. The Democrats will take control of the Senate, even while the ancient Strom Thurmond (who switched parties himself back in the Mesozoic period) is still shuffling along. Jeffords has long been one of the GOP’s most liberal members. […]

Propose a different plan that will not solve the problem, but will reward wealthy business interests that funded your campaign. Repeat. First it was the economy. President […]
Gore’s Liberal Secret
When President Clinton goofed during the State of the Union address, solemnly paying tribute to Vice President Gore for his effort to “make our communities more liberal,” he got a lot of laughter. And even more when he flubbed it again. But the guffawing audience didn’t know how very true Clinton’s Freudian blunder was. Clinton […]
Taxing Rhetoric:
“A lot of people feel as if they have been looking through the window at somebody else’s party,” empathized President Bush at a recent tax-cut pushing event. “It is time to fling those doors and windows open and invite everybody in.” He further pronounced, “I strongly believe that a tax relief plan is an important […]
The Streets of Philadelphia
Perhaps the most surreal part, however, is the band of goats encircling and taunting an anti-abortion protester who has a huge and particularly grisly poster. (The past two days have confirmed that the anti-abortion crowd is dogged, obsessed, and like Visa: Everywhere you want to be.) One of the goats, carrying a sign that says […]
