The ace reporters over at the Politico have the scoop on the latest GOP gambit:
They’ll also begin to use “Pelosi-Reid-Obama” in the all-in-the-same-breath way that Democrats now use “Bush-McCain” — to make the parties’ popular candidates indistinguishable from their less beloved incumbents.I'm not as sanguine as some of my colleagues about this election, but reading stories like this, it's hard not to be optimistic. If the fundamental question of the election is Bush-McCain or Obama-(some legislator you've not really heard of)-(some legislator you don't know much about), then it's hard to see how the GOP pulls this one out. But even if this is a stupid idea, what else are they going to do? They've not been able to figure out a coherent line of attack against Obama. In 2004, Republicans settled on "flip-flopper" early in the election, then pounded that in for the next year. This cycle, they've been, as Steve Benen put it, like a kid with a pinata, stumbling dizzily about, swinging in every which direction in the hopes of making contact.
