The LA Times reports today on seizures of surprisingly sophisticated homemade submarines used to transport drugs into the U.S:
Over the last two years, Colombian authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy have seized 13 submarine-like vessels outfitted for drug running. The five seized by American authorities were en route to Mexico or Central America, each loaded with 3 to 5 tons of cocaine. The seizures point to a security threat that goes beyond drug trafficking. Many law enforcement officials are concerned that U.S. ports and shorelines could be vulnerable to terrorist attacks using such crudely built submarines.Gee, maybe we should stop to consider that creating vast financial incentives for the unscrupulous to get around our border protections could have some negative consequences. Not to mention the fact that our drug policies fund civil wars, the Taliban, and a whole bunch of other deeply unsavory folks. I doubt I need to convince many readers of this blog about this, but it's worth repeating again because, while I doubt anything will be done about it any time soon, the longer we accept that better drug laws aren't going to happen the longer they won't.--Sam Boyd
