Matt has a good post on the importance of design in creating a livable landscape. Power lines, windmills, trash cans -- these things all need to be visually acceptable in order to create an aesthetically appealing city. Private industry, on some level, knows this. Telecommunications companies are incredibly savvy about disguising cell phone tower. Back in my hometown, one cell phone tower was a huge cross on the lawn of a church ("Can you hear me now, God? It's me, Margaret."). Another looked like a tree.
