John O. Brennan, the former CIA official whose defenses of torture and rendition are still only being referred to in the mainstream media by euphemism, will be taking a White House domestic counterterrorism position that won't require a messy airing of his views in a confirmation hearing. According to the Times, Brennan would be reporting to national security adviser James L. Jones, whose opposition to torture has been public. The position would be created by eliminating the independent homeland security adviser’s office and giving those duties to the NSC.
