You often hear certain centrist, foreign-policy focused Democrats argue that Barack Obama should choose Chuck Hagel for his vice-president, putting someone who disagrees with Democrats on economics, health care, choice, worker rights, gay rights, etc, a (missed) heartbeat away from the presidency. That's a bad idea. Nor am I fan of making a Republican Secretary of Defense or State, either of which imply that foreign policy and national security are the province of the right. But there's no reason Hagel couldn't be an excellent Secretary for Nuclear Non-Proliferation.
