Goods news out of California today where a poll shows Proposition 8, the ballot initiative banning gay marriage, losing by eight points. Other polls have shown it in a tighter race, or even passing, but the Public Policy Institute of California is considered a fairly reputable outfit. This raises the possibility, of course, that California could, in one year, pass initiatives codifying the legalization of gay marriage, ensuring the more humane treatment of animals (Prop 2), and funding a high-speed rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles (Prop 1). In other words, a good year for progressives, but a bad year for people who spend much time around Californian progressives, as we're going to become all the more self-satisfied and obnoxious.
