But there is something wrong with Slate's well-intentioned "Slate 60" list of top charitable donors. Not all "charities" are alike after all. Who tops the list? Cordelia Scaife May. Yes, that is Scaife as in Scaife the rightwingers whose foundations give to such "charitable" organizations as Heritage and so forth... I'm not saying Slate should politically vet the list. After all, I'd like to bring attention to those who give generously to liberal charities, and I have to accept some conservatives slipping in if I want to be consistent and not just demand that Slate pursue my personal beliefs. But, some context would be appreciated, such as a brief description of what some of these foundations are actually set up to do. The names are often far from self-explanatory.
