I just caught this Today show interview between Matt Lauer and Carla Bruni Sarkozy, France's first lady. And while it's interesting to see just how different Carla, a singer-songwriter and former model, is from any American first lady ever, in some ways she is similar. For example, she'll express feminist principles, but decries feminism: "Usually first ladies have been supporting their husbands ... but when I met my husband, which was only a year ago, I had a previous life. And so I thought I'd keep [my job as a performer]. ... And I thought maybe for a woman nowadays, it's important to have a job, you know, and to keep it. It's not that I'm such a feminist."
