Tom Perriello has been posting at TPMCafe's Table for One for the past week. He is a candidate for Virginia's 5th Congressional District, and is probably the clearest example of someone who combines progressive politics and adherence to the Christian religion. Friday's post dealt with whether progressive Christians should be feared or not.
It's a valid question. Christians have left a path of destructionbehind them as they've organized into a surprisingly coherent politicalmovement, through Bush of course, as well as countless school boards,state legislators, federal legislators, sheriffs and judges. As I seeit, the concern about progressive Christians is that their progressivepolitics are in tension with their Christian beliefs and will lose theinevitable showdown between them. And of course Democratic politicianshave reached out to the so-called "values voters" by doing the samething they do every time they court a particular group, which iscompete to see who can sound and act most like a Republican.
But Perriello is a good example of two very important truths that must be understood by the progressive movement:
