What MSNBC host Ed Schulz said about conservative radio host Laura Ingraham was disgusting, and his temporary suspension seems like an appropriate sanction. At the same time, this kind of sexism, while not always expressed in such crude terms, is pretty common in the universe of right-wing media, including on Igraham's show. Part of the reason Shultz ended up getting punished is that a lot of liberals don't like it when women are called "sluts" regardless of the target, whereas the conservative talk radio/Fox News audience is largely indifferent to the way liberal women are talked about unless there's some sort of obvious political angle to exploit. It's important to remember that there are an infinite number of ways to tell a woman to shut up and stay in her place that don't involve calling her a "slut," but aren't any less regressive for eschewing crude language.
