The days of "Plants for Hillary" are over. CW now says: John Edwards will be playing nice through Jan. 3, reverting to the "sunny optimist" persona, aka the "positive populist." Edwards is the one who opened the floodgates for gloves-off (though not personal) attacks against Hillary Clinton. Now, with Clinton and Obama going at each other with abandon, it makes sense for him to back off and try to win over undecided Iowans by appearing to rise above the fray. But I don't expect to stop hearing Edwards talk about Clinton as a "corporate Democrat." He's made that one of his signatures in this campaign, and if there's one thing we know about John Edwards, we know he sticks to the scripts with which he's most comfortable (the mill, the two Americans, the anti-lobbying...). UPDATE: Oh yeah -- Edwards is still talking about "corporate Democrats." Check out the new New Hampshire ad. --Dana Goldstein
