I've spent a lot of time this week talking about what's wrong with San Francisco, and hardly enough on the things that make it worth all the trouble. So here’s a simple charm: soul music. Sure, it’s got a different musical history than, say, Detroit or Chicago. But it’s there (just ask Oliver Wang).
A few years back, a local DJ started a monthly soul party called Devil's Pie. The goal was simple: Have a guest DJ rock a monthly party dedicated to spinning classic oldies and other feel-good music under 60 rpm. Cake was involved. And an occasional Black Samauri movie. The party, along with its founder DJ Phatrick, have since moved down to Los Angeles, but thankfully the Interwebs keep it alive with free downloads of each hour-long set. After a week of really bad news, stuff like this is kinda necessary. I’ve had The Watts 79' Edition (mixed by Ohmega Watts) on repeat all day. Listen for yourself (for free).
So if you're still looking for a good Mother's Day gift, this just might do the trick. And if this Watts mix doesn't do the trick, this Motown-inspired freebie just might. Happy Friday.
