Perhaps the author of this New York Sun editorial condemning Garance and Matt Yglesias' opposition to Rudy Giuliani didn't live in New York City during the Giuliani mayoralty -- and also didn't own a television or know how to read back then? How else to account for his forgetfulness about the racial and ethnic divisiveness of Giuliani's leadership? The Brooklyn Museum controversy. Abner Louima. No matter how hawkish you are on the Middle East, are these flare-ups Americans want repeated on the national stage? In any case, while it would be fun if more newspaper editorialists cited my favorite progressive bloggers, the attempt to do so here reeks of confusion. Inexplicably, Matt's Atlantic blogging is "a piece published on the Web by the Atlantic Monthly," while Garance's TAPPED contribution is a "post." Huh? And what's with condescening to Matt and Josh Marshall by addressing them with the French "Monsieur" title? Is this the kind of formality one reserves for one's adversaries? You know, like in a duel? En garde! Lastly, the Sun's attempts in the same editorial to assert that they are pulling up to the New York Times in the circulation race is patently absurd. Most New Yorkers who receive the Sun are getting it for free. Since I found that out, I've stopped fretting about the mental health of my mom's next door neighbor, whose doorstep always holds a copy of the paper. Granted, the Sun culture pages are serious and enjoyable -- I've even had several friends who've written for them. And they did publish columns by our own Ezra. But really. They seemed quite confused this morning. --Dana Goldstein
