It's worth pointing out that McCain's statement yesterday suggesting that Iran is a training ground for al Qaeda was not a one-off. He's said tat repeatedly. As Max Bergmann comments, "That is not a gaffe. That is called believing something that isn't true. It is called being confused. And being confused about the differences between Shia and Sunni when claiming that you should be elected president of the United States on your foreign policy knowledge and experience, is simply not okay. This is a big deal." It is a big deal. Especially when McCain has a fairly aggressive policy take on Iran and the long-time belief that they were an al Qaeda safeground may have contributed to his thinking. One of these days I'm going to figure out which issue area it is that John McCain mastered in 90-odd years in Congress. It isn't the economy, and it's certainly not health care, and it doesn't appear to be national security. Maybe water systems?
