The big military news today is that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates fired not only the Secretary of the Air Force, but also its Chief of Staff. The proximate cause is poor handling of loose nukes and uneven performance in Iraq and Afghanistan, but as Rob Farley argues, the problems run right down to a more fundamental incoherence in mission. Indeed, this is as good a time as any to link to Farley's argument that we should abolish the air force altogether.
