It's easy to be negative about the state of world affairs, but good news does surface occasionally, such as the results of the presidential election in Chile: "Socialist Michelle Bachelet, a separated mother and former political exile, won elections on Sunday to become the first female president in socially conservative Chile with a victory that underscores the left's growing hold on Latin America."
Those words will make Cheney's blood run cold, but cheers to Bachelet. Best of luck to her and to Chile, which is undergoing a political sea change: "Bachelet, an agnostic with three children from two relationships, benefited from a shift to more secular values in Chile, which until recently had a reputation as one of the region's most traditional and socially conservative countries." And that move to a culture that will accept a left-leaning woman as president is something to be glad about. We can do it, too.
