Over in North Carolina, Elizabeth Dole is asking the right questions: What exactly has Kay Hagan -- a longtime "elder" at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro -- promised the nation's "Godless Americans?"
The backstory here is that this was an ordinary Democratic fundraiser where the host happened to also be affiliated with the "Godless Americans" group. Indeed, the grainy, oversaturated picture of a furtive Kay Hagan? From something else. The disembodied voice shouting out "there is no God!" at the end? Belongs to someone else. And frankly, the whole ad belongs to another era. Atheist bashing is, like, so early-90s. It's not been cool since Poppy Bush said, "I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots." The sweet spot now is accusing Hagan of memorizing the Koran because she once rode in a cab where the driver was named Mohammed (like the prophet!), or, at the least, attacking her for being a member of a breakaway Mormon sect that still practices polygamy. Ah well. No one ever accused Elizabeth Dole of having her finger on the pulse of the kids, or even the youthful seeming bigots. And this atheist-bashing is still pretty ugly, so at least she got that part right. I, of course, am a 501(c)3, and am only interested in issue education, but if I were a Godless American, I might want to punish Dole's bigotry by throwing some non-divine providence towards Hagan in the final days of this race. This sort of divisiveness shouldn't just be condemned -- it should be soundly defeated.
