This LA Times article on the ambiguities within many of Hillary Clinton's policy positions is that rarest of campaign dispatches: A useful, informative, piece of writing. For instance, the article notes that Clinton whips up crowds by demanding, "are you ready to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home!?" But when she's not looking for an applause line, here's how she phrases it:
"We must begin to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home as quickly and responsibly as we can," the New York senator said. Her call to "begin to end the war" left Clinton substantial maneuvering room -- and since then she has refused even to commit to withdrawing all U.S. troops by 2013, the end of the next president's first term.
So it looks like she's not necessarily ready either. The article's also good at tracking her evolution on trade, and particularly on the Bankruptcy Bill, where she voted for the 2001 incarnation, a move that, according to some of the bill's opponents, collapsed the coalition that had been blocking the legislation.
