My personal tradition on Jewish holidays is to spend some of the day reading the theologian who's influenced me most deeply: Abraham Joshua Heschel. I generally pick a couple pieces from Spiritual Audacity and Moral Grandeur, the best compendium of his exquisite essays. Hoping to share some of these, I spent some time searching for reprints of his articles online, but couldn't find full text or even lengthy excerpts of any. The closest I could come were these pieces from Choose Life! , this bit from No Religion is an Island, and these unconnected quotes. In the spirit of the day, I'm sorry.
I do recommend, however, that you render my failure an opportunity, and those interested in Jewish theology purchase or peruse Spiritual Audacity and Moral Grandeur, Sabbath, or God in Search of Man. They're truly powerful books, and I find them sustaining and refreshing in an age when "proper" religious experiences are often cheapened and offensive. That's what I'm doing, and with my head a bit fogged from fasting, this'll likely be it from me till tomorrow.
